Jack Davis: Grade 8
How many of us remember Fridays last year? We could leave school at 2:00 p.m., and we could also have dessert. Now, we are dismissed at the usual time, and desserts have been exiled to Wednesday to try to raise the mid-week morale. But is this really a good change?
From a student’s perspective, no. I do not think this is a good change. Dessert on Fridays was a fun, happy thing to look forward to. It was a way to lift the week off our shoulders, like a crane lifts a heavy load.
With dessert on Wednesdays, in the thick of the week, it is hard to enjoy the treats. When dessert was on Fridays, it was easy to enjoy, because we felt like the week was over. But on Wednesday, we know we have two long days left.
Looking back, Buckley did successfully turn Friday into a normal day. On one hand, this is a good thing, because it lets us focus on our schoolwork. On the other hand, though, it makes the week feel so much longer. I do think, however, that dessert should be put back on Fridays, because it helps students relax and it rewards us after a long week’s work.
