Q: Why do you love English?
A: I’ve always loved English since I was very little. I love reading. I love writing, and I love how English helps you deal with everyday life.
Q: What’s your favorite part about teaching?
A: Getting to know my students and helping others really understand and realize the joy of reading.
Andrew Mazza: Grade 8
During week twelve in the National Football League (NFL), there was one major match-up most New Yorkers and people from Washington, D.C., were talking about on Sunday and Monday. The Giants played in Washington and were grilled! In the first half, Dominique Rogers-Cromartie and his defense allowed 17 points. Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning was thirsty for a comeback, and he abused cornerback Bashaud Breeland and his miss-match with Odell Beckham, Jr. late in the game. Even though he made an amazing one-handed catch, Beckham, Jr. was not able to make a comeback. The final score was 20-14.
Andrew Mazza: Grade 8
During the eleventh week of the National Football League (NFL), some major games occurred. The Carolina Panthers kept a perfect season alive by clutching a game against the Redskins 44-16. Quarterback Cam Newton recorded a personal record of five passing touchdowns, and luckily for the Panthers, an early pick six was nullified after a penalty on the play. The New York Giants and New Orleans Saints had a bye week, so there was no loss for either team. Quarterback Tony Romo came back and improved the Dallas Cowboys’ record to 3-7 with a victory over the Miami Dolphins. To continue with the NFC East theme, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers overcame the Philadelphia Eagles 45-17. Quarterback Mark Sanchez started the game off really well but unfortunately could not keep the early lead with a few interceptions.
Andrew Mazza: Grade 8
During the tenth week of the National Football League (NFL), many big plays occurred and many awards were presented. First, I would like to congratulate Kirk Cousins from the Washington Redskins and Ben Roethlisberger from the Pittsburgh Steelers for receiving the Offensive Player of the Week in their respective leagues. Next, I would like to congratulate Terence Newman from the Minnesota Vikings and Bacarri Rambo from the Buffalo Bills for winning Defensive Player of The Week in their leagues.
Maya Chugh Singh: Grade 5
Just like for all fifth graders, the jump from the Lower School to the Upper School is a big change. Of course, the academics are a big jump, but the amount of free and transition time we get is also a big adjustment, especially on Fridays. On Fridays, all Upper Schoolers have no recess, longer classes, more classes in a row, no transition time, and most importantly, no snack. I wanted to learn more about why Fridays were like this, so I went to the person who would know most about this: Mrs. Linda Bernard.
Max Lunievicz: Grade 8
Every year, Buckley Country Day School’s students in grades 5-8 sand and paint wooden toys, donate sets of hats and gloves, and wrap these garments in paper during the weeks before the winter break. They do this to prepare for the annual field trip to two Head Start Programs, where each Upper School student is paired with a toddler to enjoy various activities. Some of these fun activities include coloring, cookie decorating, and many more small art projects.
Annie Mulholland: Grade 8
Throughout the year Buckley students have expressed themselves in various ways, from writing a two-page essay to showing themselves through self-portraits. These are some various examples of what these students have produced in art teacher Mrs. Jennifer Demopoulos’ classroom. Some, in fact, are still in development.
S. Maxwell Brown: Grade 7
The seventh-grade class of Buckley Country Day School is artistic in many ways. Mrs. Jennifer Demopoulos, the art and dance teacher, is teaching the seventh-grade about self-portraits. She is, however, teaching the students a different way of interpreting self-portraits. Mrs. Demopoulos specifically instructed the students to include certain things they like or things that have deeper meaning behind them. Many students internalized her idea of creating self-portraits and made it their own.
Teddy Brita: Grade 8
Today I am going to be bringing you my personal comparison of two of the most popular Nike soccer cleats: the Magista Obra and the Hypervenom Phantom II. I have worn both of the cleats. They are both different but equally high-performance cleats. Often it is difficult to find the right cleat, but hopefully I can help you out.
Laila Mak: Grade 2
No matter what grade you are in, I’m sure one thing Buckley students can agree on is that studying is a big part of their lives. It is important, therefore, that we know how to study smarter. How do we study smarter? To get some great answers, I interviewed Ms. Jennifer Appel, the seventh- and eighth-grade English teacher who also teaches study skills once a week.
