The step from third grade to fourth might sound easy, but it is actually very hard. You are probably wondering how it can be hard, but being the leaders of the Lower School can at first seem exasperating. All of the younger kids look up to my peers and me. I wanted to interview some students to get their perspectives about being the leaders of the Lower School.
On February 12, 2016, Buckley’s annual Lunar New Year assembly took place. Eugene Park, Naomi Nishimura, Henry Yoon, and Jane Park performed in a Korean Percussion performance.
Lower School students learning Tae Kwon Do preformed an outstanding dance routine to “Gangnam Style.”
How many of us remember Fridays last year? We could leave school at 2:00 p.m., and we could also have dessert. Now, we are dismissed at the usual time, and desserts have been exiled to Wednesday to try to raise the mid-week morale. But is this really a good change?
February saw another exciting month of action in the Premier League. Arsenal had its usual up and down month, starting with a disappointing 0-0 draw at home against Southampton and then going on to a comfortable 2-0 away win against Bournemouth. The weekend after, they played a massive game against in-form Leicester City, with Danny Welbeck scoring a dramatic 90th-minute winner. Two weeks later, they fell (deservedly, it must be said) to a vintage Manchester United, 3-2 at Old Trafford. At the end of the month, they were in second place.
At 10:00 a.m. on March 22, 2016, and at 7:00 p.m. on March 23, 2016, the 8th-graders presented their production of Mary Poppins in the auditorium. Behind the scenes, rehearsals were intense and exciting.
On Tuesday, January 26, 2016, the 8th grade went to “witness” The Honorable Stephen J. Bogacz in his courtroom at the Queens County Family Courthouse. In the seventh grade, the students had previously participated in a mock trial in which Judge Bogacz was the judge. To follow up on their mock trial, Judge Bogacz invited the class to a day of watching real cases at the family courthouse where he works.
Every year before the Thanksgiving Break, Buckley Country Day School has its Thanksgiving assembly. It traditionally takes place on the Wednesday half-day before the holiday. At this time, the Upper School comes together to perform a music program from their chosen elective: Percussion, Dance, Band, Strings, or Chorus. Students are required to enroll in one of these programs for the entire year staring in fifth grade (although dance is only for students in grades seven and eight). Each of these programs meets on Mondays and Wednesdays to learn new skills and practice for school assemblies. At the Thanksgiving assembly, each of the programs played what they rehearsed, usually one or two songs. This year, the Percussion group played “Where are Ü Now,” the Band played “Over the Rainbow,” and the other music programs performed different dances and songs according to their grade.
Do you wish to hear the hooves of the buffalo
As they tread everything beneath them
With a rush louder than the sound
Of a thousand bullets freed from the bonds of the gun barrel?
Do you wish to see the sun rise
It’s welcome light vanquishing the shadows of the dark
With a stern steady hand
While it tends to life with the gentleness of a mother?
